The Bridging the Gap program, funded by the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton in partnership with the Region of Halton, makes a meaningful difference in the lives of youth aged 16-24 who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Halton. Since its inception, the program has provided critical support to numerous young individuals, offering a comprehensive range of services designed to foster stability, independence, and a brighter future.

 

Through its innovative approach, Bridging the Gap addresses the root cause of youth homelessness, providing specialized support to those in need. The program offers housing support, training and educational resources, transitional housing, life-skills and wrap-around support, single occupancy apartments, and host-home programs, empowering youth to overcome the challenges of housing instability.

 

Through collaborative efforts the Bridging the Gap program is breaking the cycle of homelessness!

Meet Phil Grimes: A Shining Example of Resilience and Giving Back.

 

As a devoted husband, father, and successful Certified Financial Planner, Phil has built a life many would envy. But few know that Phil's journey began with a childhood marked by uncertainty and change, which led to him becoming a child in care of the Halton Children's Aid Society at age six. Despite facing numerous challenges, including frequent placement changes and times of loneliness, Phil's resilience and determination propelled him forward. With the support of his social worker Cynthia Thomas, Phil thrived, exhibiting the responsibility and skills required to live in an independent setting at age 15 while finishing high school. He took advantage of every educational opportunity and with a keen entrepreneurial spirit was a great advocate for his peers in care. Today, Phil gives back as a donor and treasured Ambassador and is a former Board member of both the Children's Aid Foundation of Halton and the Halton Children's Aid Society. He fully understands the value of every donation, knowing it can be a true lifeline for a child in care. Phil's story is a testament to the power of support and opportunity. We marked a CAFH milestone on March 12, celebrating 35 years of providing critical support to vulnerable children, youth and families in Halton.

This momentous occasion was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including Adam Van Koeverden, MP Milton, Natalie Pierre, MPP Burlington, Effie Triantafilopoulos, MPP Oakville North–Burlington, and Paul Sharman, Councilor Ward 5 Burlington, as well as Michelle McGaw Executive Director of the Halton Children’s Aid Society, many staff, volunteers and dedicated Ambassadors of CAFH.

 

The event celebrated and showcased the accomplishments, countless partnerships and positive outcomes of the many children, youth and families who have overcome challenges to achieve their full potential.

 

 

The Moonlight on Mainway event raised awareness of youth experiencing homelessness in Halton. It generated over $13,000 and brought people together to spend time outside on one of the coldest nights of the year, proving that people really care. Not only do they want to help, but also to understand the issues faced by unhoused people and how these situations occur, particularly for those so young. Funds raised will provide important services and support for young people involved in the Bridging the Gap program.
